چکیده

The stack in various forms[1] has been widely used as an architectural template for networking systems. Recently the stack has been subject to criticism for a lack of flexibility. However, when it comes right down to it nobody has offered a truly compelling alternative. Various “cross-layer” optimizations have been proposed, but these optimizations are frequently hacks to achieve a particular goal and offer no direct insight into why the existing network stack is inadequate. We propose that a fundamental problem with the existing network stack is that it attempts to layer functionality that is not well-suited to layering. In this work we use a “bottom up” model of information computation, storage, and transfer and the “top down” goals of networking systems to formulate a modular decomposition of networking systems. Based on this modular decomposition we propose a semantic layered structure for networking systems that eliminates many awkward cross-layer interactions that arise in the canonical layered stack.

Layering the Semantic Web: Problems and Directions

The Resource Description Framework and the Resource Description Framework Schema Specification are supposed to be the foundations of the Semantic Web, in that all other Semantic Web languages are to be layered on top of them. It turns out that such a layering cannot be achieved in a straightforward way. This paper describes the problem with the straightforward layering and lays out several alte...

Pixel-Level Encoding and Depth Layering for Instance-Level Semantic Labeling

Recent approaches for instance-aware semantic labeling have augmented convolutional neural networks (CNNs) with complex multitask architectures or computationally expensive graphical models. We present a method that leverages a fully convolutional network (FCN) to predict semantic labels, depth and an instance-based encoding using each pixel’s direction towards its corresponding instance center...

The Symbiosis of Human and Semantic Technology Through the Lens of Actor-Network Theory

Background:  Semantic technologies (STs) have made machine reasoning possible by providing intelligent data management methods. This capability has created new forms of interaction between humans and STs, which is called "semantic interaction."  The increasing spread of this form of interaction in daily life reveals the need to identify the factors affecting it and introduce the requirements of...

An Alternative Viewpoint on the (Cross–)Layering in Wireless Networks

The capacity of a communication network depends on the mode in which the network is operated. The operational mode is determined by the network protocols, which are in turn built within a layered architecture. In the recent years there has been an abundance of efforts to optimize the protocols in the wireless networks through a cross–layer design, which is an approach that goes beyond the appli...

Cluster Based Cross Layer Intelligent Service Discovery for Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks

The ability to discover services in Mobile Ad hoc Network (MANET) is a major prerequisite. Cluster basedcross layer intelligent service discovery for MANET (CBISD) is cluster based architecture, caching ofsemantic details of services and intelligent forwarding using network layer mechanisms. The cluster basedarchitecture using semantic knowledge provides scalability and accuracy. Also, the mini...
